Maybe the color has been washed out of this video; maybe there was color in the original broadcast. Nevertheless, I stand by my belief that it’s hard to top a lip-synced performance on a white background.

Unless the song lyrics are written there:

If you turn off the audio and drink a few beers you would swear this is Paul Revere and The Raiders. Must be the suits. Stevie Wright does bear a resemblance to Mark Lindsay.

  3. Don’t forget this video when we run Last Man Standing: Videos Featuring Monkees!

I couldn’t get this song out of my head yesterday. It’s a horrible video, probably taken off of someone’s tv, but I love the song.

It makes sense that there were a plethora of white backgrounds in the 60’s – the time for op art and pop art. In black suits, the band members look like they are floating in air. And then when you add colored backgrounds: groooooovy!

Here’s a better version of the same video.

Would it have been shot in b/w or color? This one looks like it’s been colorized. And Mr. Smother’s patter – you just can’t write that kind of stuff!

  6. That show was in color. I’m going to be chuckling over the Quaker Oats Dude reference all day. Thank you!
