  20. Mr. Moderator

Welcome aboard, retrorelix! Just a note, I can’t be sure because I’m just another contestant in this game, but it’s possible that some of your answers were right the first time but not in the right place. Sammymaudlin’s a hard ass – in a good way – about such things.

As for Stephen Malkmus – and making no judgments on your character – you strike me as a Townsman with a taste for late-’60s/early-70s stoner rock. Malkmus was the leader of ’80s indie-rock titans Pavement, which I only liked so much, but I highly recommend his solo album, Face the Truth, from which “Mama” comes. At least two songs from his most-recent, more-uneven album, can be found here, in the RTH archives:

    Don’t be a stranger!

  21. sammymaudlin

Retrorelix picks up another, #11. Bravo.

Zep for 8 is a good guess but no.

    2.
    3. Feart, “Magic Man”
    4. The Doors, “The End”
    5.
    6. The Runaways, “Cherry Bomb”
    7.
    8. John Lennon, “Mother”
    9. Stephen Malkmus, “Mama”
    10.
    11. AC/DC, “Highway to Hell”
    12. RHCP, “Mommy Where’s Daddy”

Is it time for training wheels already?

  22. 2000 Man

Is seven Elton John, Crocodile Rock?

  23. sammymaudlin

    No.

    Training wheels coming soon.

  24. sammymaudlin

    Extended dance mix up.

  25. #5 – Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo – Rick Derringer

  26. hrrundivbakshi

    #7: “Hey Lawdy Mama”

  27. sammymaudlin

Almost there. Though, we officially need an artist for #7…

    1. Queen, “Bohemian Rhapsody”
    2.
    3. Feart, “Magic Man”
    4. The Doors, “The End”
    5. Rick Derringer, “Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo”
    6. The Runaways, “Cherry Bomb”
    7. ______, “”Hey Lawdy Mama” “
    8. John Lennon, “Mother”
    9. Stephen Malkmus, “Mama”
    10.
    11. AC/DC, “Highway to Hell”
    12. RHCP, “Mommy Where’s Daddy”

  28. sammymaudlin

Hints: Shame on all of you for not getting #2 yet.

#10 is tough, tough, tough but none other than Mr. Mod (no he doesn’t just fly in for games) himself posted this song within these hallowed halls.

  29. hrrundivbakshi

Well, the tempo for “Hey Lawdy Mama” is slower than the Minutemen version I know, so I’m gonna guess the obvious: Steppenwolf?

  30. #2 Mama Told me not to Come

  31. Mr. Moderator

I can’t believe I own and have posted #10 yet can’t identify it!

  32. I take back my guess about #2.

Boy is that one bugging me though…

It sounds like Michael Stipe or some alt-country/country rock thing.

  33. sammymaudlin

Big Wheel version on the way.

  34. sammymaudlin

It’s up. And yeah hr, Hey Lawdy Mama is the Steppenwolf version.

  35. Mama you’ve been on my mind

  36. Come on Sammy, the suspense is killing me. Is #2 Rod Stewart?

  37. sammymaudlin

Bingo! 11 down 1 to go.

    1. Queen, “Bohemian Rhapsody”
    2. Rod Stewart, “Mama You’ve Been On My Mind”
    3. Feart, “Magic Man”
    4. The Doors, “The End”
    5. Rick Derringer, “Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo”
    6. The Runaways, “Cherry Bomb”
    7. Steppenwolf, “”Hey Lawdy Mama”
    8. John Lennon, “Mother”
    9. Stephen Malkmus, “Mama”
    10.
    11. AC/DC, “Highway to Hell”
    12. RHCP, “Mommy Where’s Daddy”

  38. hrrundivbakshi

Well, that’s frustrating. I know #10, I think — but I can’t think of the name of the song or the artist. Isn’t it a song that contains the line (truncated in this file):

“Cry, cry, for every mother’s son…”

  39. hrrundivbakshi

No, wait… I’m thinking of “Jail Guitar Doors.” And that certainly ain’t the Clash. Is it a cover? Is it Nixon’s Head?

  40. sammymaudlin

You are so close hrundi I can smell it on your breath.

  41. sammymaudlin

C’mon Mod. Put this effing thing to bed already. You know what I’m talking about.

  42. alexmagic

    10. The 101ers – Lonely Mother’s Son

    5. Rick Derringer, “Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo”
    6. The Runaways, “Cherry Bomb”
    7. Steppenwolf, “”Hey Lawdy Mama”
    8. John Lennon, “Mother”
    9. Stephen Malkmus, “Mama”
    10. The 101ers, “Lonely Mother’s Son”
    11. AC/DC, “Highway to Hell”
    12. RHCP, “Mommy Where’s Daddy”

  44. Mr. Moderator

Alexmagic beat me to it! I just got bathing in the afterglow of Jayson Werth’s steal of home on Russell Martin’s lob back to the pitcher!

It’s funny, not to be too narcissistic about it, but in listening to that snippet a hundred times today I kept thinking it sounded like my man Andyr aka The Velvet Foghorn with our band. I’m proud that all that time listening to The 101’ers really sunk in.

This was a great contest, Sammy. I’m really pissed I missed one of my favorite street-fighting songs, “Hey Lawdy Mama”!
