The Rock Town Hall game anyone can play gets easier than ever with a special word-association edition. The rules are simple: give your first music-related response that pops into your head to the following list of words. It can be an artist’s name, a song, an instrument, an album title, a subgenre, you name it. All we ask is that it’s the first musically relevant word that pops into your head. Are you ready? Let’s get it on…after the jump!

  • Motorcycle:

  • Beach:
  • Lipstick:
  • Monkey:

Ready for a few more? I thought so!

I didn’t realize we got to do each word individually. When I saw Motorcycle, I pictured Lemmy from Motorhead for some reason. Going back over the list, I’m afraid I am pretty uncreatively literal in my responses:

    Lizard: The Doors

Snarl: Elvis (although his thing is more of a sneer than a snarl)

  10. trigmogigmo

Interesting… It’s possible that I have mixed up my Crosby and Stills wardrobe choices.

  11. I was thinking the exact opposite when I read your response! This is all about gut responses, however, so we’re close enough. If I had to do it over again I would have been safe saying “CSNY.”

  12. There’s no “right” answer, but Billy Idol for “snarl” comes real close. (Sid Vicious, which I think cdm said first, is another good one.)

  13. H. Munster

Motorcycle: Bad (I realize nobody gets this. There was a song named “Bad Motorcycle”, two versions of which charted in Detroit in the early sixties. I can’t find anything about it on either Google or Youtube. Snippets from the lyrics include:
My little baby she rides a motorcycle
She drags everybody down Sixty-third Street
    She calls it Nitro)
    Lipstick: On Your Collar
    Lizard: Jim Morrison
    Beach: Boys
    Monkey: Mickey’s
    Snarl: nothing comes to mind
Gum: John Lennon (I’m thinking of the video of him doing Mother at Madison Square Garden)
    Comb: Kookie
    Ring: Around Your Neck
    Suede: Shoes
This really dates me around here.

  14. 2000 Man

    Motorcycle: Don’t Touch Me There
Lizard: King, I can do anything
Beach: baby beach baby give me your hand
    Lipstick: and Leather
Monkey: If man is 5 and god is 6 and devil is seven, is Monkey 4? Or are dolphins 4 and Monkey 3?

Ready for a few more? I thought so!
    Snarl: Billy Idol’s mouth
    Gum: Lou Reed
    Comb: Cookie
Ring: This diamond ring doesn’t shine like it did before
    Suede: Ooga Chaka

  15. Funny, Lennon is who I had in mind for “gum” when I chose the question. Then I forgot about it and answered something different. I’m glad you came up with that one.

  16. I did this without looking at the other responses so there may be some overlap:
    Motorcycle: Judas Preist
    Lizard: King (Jim M)
Beach: Neil Young’s On The …
    Lipstick: “… Vogue”
Monkey: Business, as in “No More …
    Snarl: Traffic
Gum: Ball Rally (a 70’s movie, probably not as rocking as “Death Race 2000” or “Cannonball Run”)
Comb: Over (is that Paul’s real hair?)
    Ring: … Of Fire
Suede: Head (I think that’s a Morrisey solo record)

  17. trigmogigmo

    That’s a great one for Monkey. I think it’s:
“if man is 5 … then the devil is 6 … and if the devil is 6 … then god is 7 … this monkey’s gone to heaven”
I don’t think there are any lower numbers mentioned there.

  18. Motorcycle: Lucinda Williams — her notable quote The perfect man is “a poet on a motorcycle.”
    Lizard: Blue Oyster Cult Godzilla!
Beach: Now the band Beach House is top of mind for me.
    Lipstick: David Johansen
Monkey: Lancelot Link — Secret Chimp Theme Song
    Snarl: Chrissie Hynde singing “Precious”
Gum: Doublemint Twins Theme from the 70s
Comb: Bowie’s hair combed perfectly on several album covers.
    Ring: The Clash — “Ring, ring it’s 7 a.m . . . ” The Magnificent Seven
Suede: Bloodsports — the new album by the band.

  19. Bronzed Nordic God

Most of my associations were boring and already covered above, but I do like my association for lizard which no one else has: “If you squeeze my lizard, I’ll put my snake on you”. Best Motorhead lyric ever!

  20. ladymisskirroyale

This was a very appreciated way to end the day, Mod. Putting no thinking into something is perfect for my level of exhaustion.

I haven’t looked at anyone else’s responses yet, but Mr. Royale tells me I’m right at the center of the bell curve. Drat! In a group of music nerds, I guess I’m really not nerdy enough…

Motorcycle: “Speeding Motorcycle” – the Yo La Tengo cover of Daniel Johnston’s song

Lizard: The Flying Lizards and their cover of “Money”

Beach: Beach House (who I admit to really liking despite the blandness of their last album)

Lipstick: “Lipstick Traces” by Greil Marcus

Monkey: “Monkey Gone To Heaven” by Pixies

    Snarl: Billy Idol

    Gum: K Pop

Comb: I just have this image of a disco diva with a pick extended from a shapely ‘fro.

    Ring: Ringo Starkey

Suede: the band of the same name, of course! “She’s In Fashion” is a favorite song of mine.

  21. 2000 Man

Nope, there’s no lower numbers. The word reminded me of the song, and the song always makes me wonder what number monkeys are, since it’s called Monkey Gone to Heaven. Man, devil and god all get numbers, but monkey goes to heaven.

That’s the kind of stupid stuff I think about when I’m left to my own devices.

  22. Motorcycle. Born to be Wild. Original. Mars Bonfire.
    Lizard Jim Morrison. Lizard King
    Beach “Beachboys:
    Lipstick Courtney Love, glamor version

Comb. Ed Brynes. “Kookie lend me your comb”
