I am not of the Christmas persuasion. Not really of any persuasion per se, but in watching the one holiday special that still moves me, The Grinch Who Stole Christmas of course, the spirit of the season moved me to create the following gift.

See how many of the following you can identify.

I’ll go obvious because I stink at this game: the Mary Tyler Moore theme, the Monkees’ ‘Mary Mary’ and ‘The Wind Cries Mary’.

  2. sammymaudlin

meanstom: Gonna need some positions. Any dillweed can look up “mary” songs and slap ’em down willy-nilly.

I say “dillweed” with the utmost love and affection.

  3. Damn! It’s really busy at work and this is not going to help my productivity.

2 This one is driving me nuts. It sounds like Robert Plant

Number 4 sounds like the Four Seasons, but I’ll be damned if I know the song. It’s really buggin’ me, though. I clearly *do* know it, somewheres in my noggin.

  11. sammymaudlin

HVB: Just wanted to say that we’re all counting on you for #4.

It’s not the Four Seasons though.

  12. Mr. Moderator

Are you insinuating, Sammy, that #4 is Prince, ELO, or ZZ Top?

  13. sammymaudlin

That’s just rude and insulting Mod. I was insinuating that you could find this tune in some crappy dollar bin.

  14. sammymaudlin

Not really. It is a lesser known track from a well known artist’s most well known album.

I actually have no idea if HVB would be aware of it. That was a red herring. And I’m sorry.

Ah! We do have some Camembert, sir……It’s a bit runny, sir….’Well as a matter of fact it’s very runny, sir….I think it’s runnier than you like it, sir…Yes, sir.” (bends below counter and reappears) “Oh…The cat’s eaten it.”

  15. hrrundivbakshi

Sorry, guys — right now I’m grooving on “Cry If You Want” from “It’s Hard.”

“I Shall Call Her Mary” by Montage

    Swing and a miss.

There is one more, very obvious one left.

  18. sammymaudlin

New training wheels version up with extended clips of the unsolved bits.

  19. All the easy ones are taken, but I’m going to bluff my way into saying one of them has to be Along Came Mary by the Association. How could that not be in there? The heavy guitar chords remind me of Alice Cooper’s School’s Out, but I’m grasping.

  20. sammymaudlin

How could that not be in there?

Because I didn’t put it in.

#9 should be easy, especially with training wheels.

  21. BigSteve

I think either 10 or 11 is “Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes).” It’s hard to tell where one song starts and another ends.

  22. sammymaudlin

BigSteve nails the first challenge level clip!

  23. Mr. Moderator

You’re killing me, Sammy – but don’t stop now. Can you at least tell me if I’m hearing a Crosby Stills Nash song in the second half? I’m hearing something involving a cross-legged Graham Nash, no?

There’s another song with a pounding drum beat that’s really bugging me. I sense it’s a song I used to like on an album from the early ’80s that I may not have otherwise been too big on, like The Bongos’ “In the Congo,” although it’s not that song. Know what I’m talking about?

  24. sammymaudlin

    No. Tricycle version coming up.

  25. sammymaudlin

With the exception of #9, Mod, I think you’re going to have trouble.

  26. Mr. Moderator

    7. White Stripes, “Now Mary” (FACE!)

The one you have open as #9 is Tom Petty, “Last Dance for Mary Jane” – that’s the song I thought had CSN “rug” harmonies. Isn’t it actually #10?

  27. 2000 Man

Right before Tom Petty is The Replacements – Merry Go Round. I actually got that one on the first, but I can’t count them fast enough in there!

  28. Mr. Moderator

YES – a good Replacements song on an album I probably otherwise don’t care about. NOW I can go to sleep. Thanks, 2K!

  29. 4 is Tough Mary by Etta James?

  30. sammymaudlin

Good job Townsfolk. Kudos to Mr. Mod for his use of AllMusic’s alphabetical song search.

And because I messed up in the listing of #s 10 and 11, I’ll give up #10, Mary-Christ by Sonic Youth.

    1. Mary Tyler Moore
    2. Proud Mary
    3. Mary Anne With The Shaky Hand
