Here’s Howard Cosell on Monday Night Football, shortly after 11:00 pm, 28 years ago today.

Here’s the way Howard and all of us would have preferred to have remembered John Lennon on Monday Night Football.

Mr. Mod, has it been 28 years now since that tragic night? There’s been at least several generations of kids who never remembered John or Elvis when they were alive.I always believed that something died in rock ‘n roll that night. I was in my freshman dorm at Emerson College when I first heard the news from a fellow student. I miss both Johnny Moondog & Humble Howard in their own ways. It was also interesting to see the old-style Pats uniforms in the first clip.

I still prefer the old-style Pats uniforms. I’ve gotten used to Elvis Patriot, but the old unis were more true to the team’s revolutionary name, don’t you think? Old-style Pats vs old-style Bills on the frozen tundra was a great battle of innocent, early ’70s uniform styles.

“hard to go back to the game after that news flash”

    i remember that vividly…

it was the MAIN topic of discussion at the lunch table the next day. most of my friends and i were athletes who were becoming disillusioned with jock culture at the time, and discovering the power and the glory of rock. we really liked what a class act cosell was. it made us think, for the first time, that maybe…just maybe…there was room in sports for intellect and culture.

I was watching that game. My mother actually told me a few minutes before Cosell announced it, since she was listening to the radio at the time.
There’s was some weirdness about that to me too at the time, since she listened to WINS which has been all news since 1965. But before that, of course, it was the station that had featured Murray the K’s fifth Beatle claims during the 1964 tour.

I never realized until yesterday that Lennon died on Morrison’s birthday. If there was a Rock University there would be no classes.

Yeah, I dig the old-style Pats uniforms too, but they weren’t too successful in those days compared w/the Elvis (or John Kerry) logo.

As for Howard Cosell, one of the joys of obtaining the complete set of the Odd Couple on DVD is watching the episodes in which he guest-starred.

Finally, getting back to the subject in hand, here’s a link to the Playboy interview of the Beatles that was actually conducted by Jean Shepherd of A Christmas Story fame which I think my fellow Townspeople would be interested in:
