I’m probably the last person in America to have seen this clip of President Obama singing a bit of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together,” but the American President’s Got Talent! Aside from candidate Bill Clinton playing sax on The Arsenio Hall Show so many moons ago, has any presidential candidate displayed his or her musical chops before? Has any sitting President or candidate come close to Obama’s display of musical talent, even caught on camera singning along in a church or something? Who cares about a candidate’s personal life, their stance on controversial issues, or how “presidential” their hair is? I want to know if a candidate’s got any musical chops!

Among our current crop of presidential candidates (and leading political figures), in the US or your own nation, what song would you most like to hear tackled by a particular politician?

Nixon was apparently a decent piano player.

According to yesterday’s news, Newt should sing that David Crosby song Triad that Jefferson Airplane covered on Crown of Creation.

I’d pay serious coin to hear Rick Santorum sing “Like a Virgin” — or maybe WASP’s “F*ck Like a Beast.”

  4. mockcarr

Naw, he’s GOT to sing Bama Lama Bama Loo.

I think Truman played piano but was probably not as good as Nixon.

I wish there was footage of Nixon at a piano playing and singing Bill Wyman’s “Monkey Grip” just like that clip of Wyman doing it.

Sadly, it looks like we’ll never hear John Huntsman sing his favorite Captain Beefheart songs on a campaign platform.

As for Santorum, how about him singing Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit In the Sky”? Or maybe Sha-Na-Na’s “Top 40 (Of the Lord)”?

I want to see Ron Paul playing one of these:

No real reason… I just do.

  8. tonyola

To hell with Paul. I’d love to get my hands on one of those.

  9. That last low note sounded kind of like a shart.

  10. Jimmy Carter singing “Thank God I’m a Country Boy” or “Lawyers, Guns, and Money” by Dick Cheney.

  11. cliff sovinsanity

I want NEWT to sing I Get Around.

Rather than have any of the republican contenders discuss the economy, social issues, etc. etc. they should be figuring out something more important in the next debate: Which will be Nigel Tufnel, David St. Hubbins, Derek Smalls and the replaceable drummer when they continue this touring road show of theirs. And are any of you going to see their Holiday Inn show?

  13. I heard Michelle Bachmann thought her sound bites would have sounded better in Dubly.

  14. ladymisskirroyale

    Or “Seasons in the Sun.”

  15. Not to get political or anything, but I’ve got to think the pro-Romney ads appearing in the top right corner of our browser have something to do with the “political” content of this post. At least we’re not attracting National Front ads based on the recent skinhead thread.

  16. 2000 Man

How do you play that with a straight face?

  17. bostonhistorian

I love clicking on those Romney ads. I think that means money for RTH, yes?

  18. Not that I know of, but it does lower Mitt’s tax burden.

  19. Carter actually did sing “Salt Peanuts” when Dizzy Gilespie was at the White House.

  20. misterioso

I remember that! I think of that almost every time I listen to it.
