At the end of this episode he will reveal the identity of our latest Mystery Guest!

Mod, wow, I’d never heard the white, Canadian Hendrix Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush either. Now I realize that Jon Butcher, who was very big around New England in the early 80s, was the black Frank Marino. Good to know.

  2. Butcher was never the same after he broke up the Axis!

Jeez, I remember that Head East song, too, “Since You Been Gone.” But I’m not sure if I know that version or the one by Rainbow. They (Head East) have a song on the Dazed and Confused soundtrack, too–Never Been Any Reason. But I didn’t know that one in real time, only since the movie.

  4. Oh, Rainbow did that song too??? Weird. Maybe that’s the version I grew up hearing on the radio for a few months.

As we’re discussing The Who in another thread, that song seemed to have set the template for Kenny Jones-era and solo Townshend Who singles. The singer has a similar delivery to Daltrey’s, and there’s something in the poppy structure that makes me think of “Athena” and “Let My Love Open the Door.” Think about it.

    Here’s the Rainbow version http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5rmYHuiG8lg&feature=grec_index

I’ve never been a Rainbow fan but their version kinda kicks Head East’s ass.

  6. I bet that was the hit version that I knew too! Yeah, way ballsier and even more like the kind of stuff The Who would start doing. Do you hear how the phrasing shows the way toward Daltrey’s shocking new style on “Athena”?

Rainbow’s singer, by the way, is amazing. What a Look!

One problem with Rainbow was/is that I never knew who was in the damn group. It seems like it was a constant shuffling of personnel. The other problem is that I thought the music was crushingly mediocre. But “Since You Been Gone” is ok and the Who overtones are disturbing. The singer’s look–can’t quite figure it out. Not gender bending but genre bending, anyway.
