It’s over, the first Last Man Standing that ever required an arbitrary point of completion. Sorry, cher, who came in with a final entry just seconds after the deadline. We know you were probably holding another two dozen entries. Thanks to all who played along, and thanks to cdm for launching the thread and making some difficult decisions for the betterment of the Hall!

PHOTO FINISH: STAYED TUNED FOR JUDGES’ RULING ON OUTCOME. ALL FURTHER COMMENTS FOR THIS THREAD HAVE BEEN CLOSED.

Name a song in which the lyrics mention another band or artist.

The rules:
1. Only one name check per song. (eg, You can only use “Ready Steady Go” for the Beatles or the Stones or Bobby Dylan but not all three).

2. You can’t repeat a band/artist name once it’s been used.

3. You can use different band names containing the same person (eg, if there is a song that name checks Clapton and another that name checks Blind Faith, both songs count)

4. The name must be used in the lyrics. Shout-outs do not count.

5. The reference must be on purpose. The lyrics can’t just accidentally name check the band (eg, “Alabama Getaway” does not refer to the pop county band Alabama).

6. As with all Last Man Standing competitions, only one name at a time please.

Ready? Steady? GO!

“Ready Steady Go,” by Generation X – Bobby Dylan

I am proposing possibly the shortest Last Man Standing competition in the history of Rock Town Hall…but how many times have you heard that before?

I was listening to a song today that mentioned the animal the buffalo. My mind quickly raced to two other rock songs that involve the animal the buffalo. Just now, a few hours later, a fourth song came to mind, maybe the most obvious. Can you name the four songs that I have in mind? Can you name any more than four rock songs involving the animal the buffalo?

Rock songs involving the city of Buffalo do not count. Sorry “Buffalo Rocks,” or whatever.

Because pickings are so slim, I will sit this contest out. Hopefully I will still remember the four songs I presently have in mind. Go to it!

To help give a final push to Townsman Hrrundivbakshi‘s efforts at providing aid to Haiti, I thought it might be helpful to conduct a Last Man Standing challenge on Helpful Songs. The songs should contain the word “help” in the title or a word synonymous with help (eg, “aid”). As is often the case, who knows how far this challenge can go. I can only think of four songs that would fit the bill off the top of my head, including this one:

Many moons ago Townsman sammymaudlin had an idea for Last Man Standing centered on song titles in the form of questions and answers. We’d since forgotten all about it, but luckily I found a reminder that I scribbled on a piece of scrap paper all those years ago. Posts must follow from the previous song title, so that a song title in the form of a question must be followed by an entry in the form of an answer. You may only post ONE song title at a time. You cannot just list a bunch of song title questions or song title answers in a row because you’re smart. The goal is to create song title dialog. Answers should be at least somewhat related to the questions. You’ll be standing especially tall if you can ask a question that builds off the previous answer.

I’ll start things off with a song title in the form of a question:

Q: “What’s New Pussycat?”

The first comment that anyone posts here, therefore, should be a song title that answers this question.

A:

Who’ll get the last word in, someone posting a song title in the form of a question or someone posting a song title in the form of an answer?
