Last night while watching The Bob Newhart Show (the good one from the ’70s, not the ’80s version, with the pouffy wife and bad sweaters) an ad caught my eye. I usually do my best to avoid any ads on any of the stations showing reruns of sitcoms from my youth. They make me feel really old. I wish my powers of avoidance had helped me last night, when I got sucked into the following:

  1. The message I get from these sorts of things is that once you grow up and become an “adult”, you trade in your cool vintage gear for crap from Guitar Center.

  2. A few years ago I got hit upside the head with this commercial for AARP featuring the Buzzcocks: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jUOvxG7440

I guess it makes sense from an advertising perspective. I am eligible to join the AARP in 316 days. (a friend at work pointed out that the age is 50, a fact that she knows because she has signed people up for their 50th birthday as a cruel but funny prank). The thing is, mentally, I do not feel appreciably different from when I was in my early 20’s.

    And you write shittier songs.

I’m just those guys know that one black dude who can play bass. He really has rhythm.

  5. Full disclosure: The Chicken Missus really likes that commercial. She thought for a while that the old guys were actually the same guys as the young band. The director found a band that had been playing around for 30 years, and had film of them as youngsters, and that they really did enjoy playing with each other for all those years. We know that never happens!

  6. like the South Park episode where Cartman starts a Christian Rock band and he tells Token “you’re black, of course you have a bass guitar in your attic”

As someone once said, “Everything you ever liked will be ruined one day by advertisers.”

chickenfrank, your wife is and always will be awesome, and I mean that in the most platonic of all possible ways. “hello and happy holidays” to the both of you (and to the rest of my long lost RTH pals. I miss you guys!).

I freaking LOVE this ad, for its timebending innocuousness:

Is it the 60s? the 00s? Whatever.

Are you 14 or are you 50? Who cares???

AARP thinks you’re still awesome no matter what. Know why? Because like everybody else, you’re going to age and die. And until the twain meet, AARP has you by the short hairs.

Sheesh…this ad drives a stake through the very heart of the corpse of whatever rock and roll is in the American imagination these days.

I’m going back to my bottle of Dickel. My retirement plan? Whiskey, guns, and the most advanced anti-home theft surveillance system money can buy.

    The south will rise again!

And when it does, I will be scared shitless…but ready.

On a related note, it seems to me that the front cover subjects of the AARP Magazine these days were on the front cover of Rolling Stone 35 years ago.

P.S.: 70s Bob Newhart Show is one of my fave raves (never saw the 80s one)

  11. Who do you think would win in a cutting contest? The aarp old timer’s band or the band of old timer’s from that boner medicine commercial from last year?

  12. saturnismine

hahaha…”Viva Viagra,” sung to the tune of “Viva Las Vegas,” right?

I’m taking this question very seriously.

Apparently, you could “cut” glass with a Viagra-induced rod. So maybe there’d be no stopping those guys because they’d be so damned cocky (sorry for the pun). The AARP guys, meanwhile, are hopeless retirees, more than a little self-conscious about their borderline “cute” attempt to recapture their “cute” attempt to rock during their now faded youth. Maybe I’m wrong about this….

  13. My man! I just called you out on the last Saturday Night Shut-In – or was it this coming weekend’s edition? Are you going to be around over the holidays? Hope all is well.

Is the Michael Young deal going to be consumated? And if the Rangers get Bastardo does that make the deal a “win” regardless of Young’s age?

  14. I agree, sat, although Viagra’s drummer was a little stiff.

  15. Good point although it was more than offset by some masterful handling of the organ.

  16. Maybe sort this out in a poll? I couldn’t find the Viagra band commercial in my brief online search though…

Oh man…while I’m shut-in this Saturday night, the old lady and I will have to take a listen. It will take us back to our courtin’ days. We love the SNSI (I’m serious).

This Michael Young thing seems perplexing on the surface, right? We’re already old, what do we need him for?

But the Phils would’ve won about 10 – 20 more games last year if their bullpen was stronger. THAT was their main problem, even w/ Chase and Rhino out. And losing Bastardo is addition by subtraction if there really is such a thing.

So if they can bolster the pen and try to get another year out of this group, I’m fine with adding Young. They could challenge for the title one more time.

This is all provided that they do something about the farm system.

Am I right in assuming that the farm products that make up the current (aging) nucleus are a product of Dallas Green’s late 90s early 00’s tenure w/ the team?

  18. I guess you’ve heard that we got CF Ben Revere from the Twins for Worley and Travis May. He seems to be a young Juan Pierre type.

It turns out the reliever being discussed for Michael Young may be Michael Schwimmer! Bye bye, Schwim! He’s no loss whatsoever.

I look at the possible acquisition of Young like this: he and Utley may combine to produce the type of season either one of them might have produced individually a few years ago. It beats Galvis and Frandsen on some weird platoon at third.

Oh crap! I skipped right over the holiday question!

We’ll be up from the 21st to the 30th. I think there’s a Johnny Brendas Sins show somewhere in that time frame (the 29th?) that I might catch. Are you gigging?

  20. No gigs planned for the holidays (or anytime soon). I was thinking about structuring a get-together around that show.

  21. Dang it! I’m fairly sure that I’m going to be out of town that day so I’m going to miss that show, which looks awesome, as well as another RTH Gathering.

  22. I voted for the AARP band because I might be able to use their services at some point but I do not need Viargra, knock wood.

  23. Mod,

The Mancini theme from Newhart (the 80’s version) is my own private brand of New England, LL Bean, protestant heaven. I couldn’t imagine anything lovelier.

Now you have brought out the beast in me; RTH Xmas3 anyone? No? Oh, OK….

  24. Northvan’s in the Hall! This is the true meaning of Christmas. I’m game for RTH Xmas 3. I’ll try to dig out previous episodes and set up a thread with you.

  25. The Challenger has made its way to the stage. See updated page 3 of this post for comparison and adverse events warnings!
