Wow, he played with quite a few different artists. Do you have a favorite track to highlight Bob’s playing?

  2. Let’s Get It On. Not complicated but world class.

  3. After that Standing In The Shadows Of Motown documentary came out, the Funk Brothers (or what remained of them) toured. I was fortunate to catch one of the shows and Babbitt was there. And by then even some of the ones who were still around when the movie was filmed had passed away. But Babbitt and the rest were great. It was fantastic just to see such legends in the flesh. Somewhere in the rubble here is a poster I bought that night which included Babbitt’s autograph.

Do studio crews like the Funk Brothers or Stax’s crew or the Wrecking Crew exist anymore? What are some of the other great crews?

  4. “Midnight Train to Georgia,” no doubt. “Signed Sealed Delivered” was up there too. Probably some more, once I think of them. Really nice guy too.

Thanks, guys. I looked him up on Wikipedia and was amazed at the stuff he had played. What a loss!

  6. Ladymiss, here’s the discography straight from Bob’s website. http://bobbabbitt.com/Bob_Babbitts_Site/Discography.html

I posted this already on Monday (under the Jon Lord obit). I went through a bunch of these that day, and…it’s like the guy never plated an unmemorable line in his life. It’s all top shelf stuff. If you’d like to hear him particularly highlighted, try Dennis Coffey’s “Scorpio”, in which he gets a 1 1/2 + minute solo.

  7. “played”, not “plated”.

I thought that “plated” might be a cool music term that I wasn’t cool enough to know. You know, lay down or plate some bass lines or something like that.

  9. I’m totally going to start using “plated” in the context.

  10. Well, Cynthia Plaster Caster uses the terms “plate” (in keeping with her fondness of cockney rhyming slang), but I don’t think Mr. Babbitt ever indulged in any plating…as far as I know…not that there would be anything wrong with that!

Sugarhill Gang and the Upsetters come to mind.
