Oh, my goodness gracious…

We here in the Halls of Rock Town are sometimes taken to task for being overly negative, snarky, hyper-critical, and all too often, just downright rude. As part of our collective efforts to bring a bit of sunshine and light to the world wide web, we occasionally make an extra effort effort to find something good to say about, you know, stuff that is clearly godawful.

It is in that spirit that we embark on yet another effort to bring some positivity to our proceedings. Please spend some quality time with the video above, then—if you can—please find something nice to say about it. You’ll feel a whole lot better, I promise you.

I look forward to your comments. Just remember, if you can’t say anything nice about this video… please don’t say anything at all.

One of my favorite albums of 2012 is Dwight Yoakam’s 3 Pears, which has “Rock It All Away” — a slow burner that I like.

Then I started thinking about other songs with “rock” in the title — and there are many of those, but what would be my favorite? I think I’ve settled on this chestnut from Garland Jeffreys’ out of print “Escape Artist” called “R.O.C.K.”

So, what’s your favorite song with ROCK in the title?

In honor of Rock Town Hall’s original Canadian (and hockey) correspondent, northvancoveman, is it time we prepare for the Hall’s third Christmas music mix (see and hear our first RTH Christmas)?

Christmas has long been a cause for joy in the Halls of Rock. If our old friend northvancoveman is ready to come home for Christmas, may I pose an even grander challenge? Rock Town Hall asks, Will YOU be home for Christmas?

You know who I’m talking about—founding members like E. Pluribus Gergely, kpdexter, dr john, dbuskirk, meanstom, sally cinnamon… Hell, saturnismine reappeared yesterday before he knew I called him out. This means something.

What about our dear friend, the delightful Happiness Stan? What about tonyola, who’s cape and Moog synthesizer lean against the fireplace, a chilling reminder of Christmas future?

Are you ready to compile a new Christmas mix? State your themes here and now.

Are you ready to come home for the holidays?

Last night while watching The Bob Newhart Show (the good one from the ’70s, not the ’80s version, with the pouffy wife and bad sweaters) an ad caught my eye. I usually do my best to avoid any ads on any of the stations showing reruns of sitcoms from my youth. They make me feel really old. I wish my powers of avoidance had helped me last night, when I got sucked into the following:

As Townsman Al pointed out, Little Richard is 80 years old today. Happy birthday! Although he’s alive he seems to be a bit forgotten as the rock legend he was. These days early rock ‘n roll seems thought of more in terms of Chuck Berry, Elvis, and a few semi-obscuro figures who make us feel high minded. Has Little Richard’s legacy shifted to more of a cultural icon for his influence on our age’s more fluid notions of sexuality? So be it. That in itself is a significant contribution to this world.

My uncle turned me onto him as a kid, and I always found him fascinating on both musical and cultural levels. There’s some concert movie from the early ’70s my uncle took me to see the culminated in an All-Star Jam among these early rock ‘n roll titans. Maybe it was the movie from which this clip was pulled. I remember Richard winning a fierce battle by scaling a tower of monitors in a white cape, or something like that. Baby, that’s rock ‘n roll! My uncle also owned a few of his gospel albums. He told me stories about seeing Richard pre- and post-ministerial days. After high school my uncle briefly entered a seminary. He’s always straddled the lines between rock ‘n roll and religion. He clearly identified with that part of Richard’s story. Does that part of his story still mean anything to people, or is he just a shadow of the caricature he played so well in Down and Out in Beverly Hills?

Kids, take a moment before it’s too late to tune into all the power and glory that was Little Richard.
