July’s Comment of the Month winner is BigSteve, who took a surefire route to winning this coveted award, when in a thread asking Townspeople to determine the better song among a pair of “twins” from the Kinks’ litter wrote the following:
December brought a wealth of strong contenders:
Townsman Oats, from the Weezer thread:
As for writing about the same subject matter as Lou Reed, I wasn’t aware that once Lou covered a topic as it was meant to be covered, that meant the topic was then off-limits to all other songwriters, as there was no possible way anyone could ever find something new to say about something Lou already wrote about. Maybe Rivers should have been completely tone-deaf, grown a mullet and hired some jazzbo sidemen.
Townsman hrrundivbakshi had this spot-on analysis of the Cut the Crap-era Joe Strummer interview.
However, the winner of December’s Comment of the Month award goes to Townsman gregg, who first checked in with long-lost cousin as part of our report on Jim Morrison’s pardon. More recently, he followed up with an old friend, who it turned out was the eyewitness he had in mind. For his dogged pursuit of The Truth and, better yet, the rekindling of old friendships, and because of its historical relevance, this latest follow-up is our winner! Congratulations, gregg, and make sure your cousin and friend share in your honors!
I was there with my ex wife at the concert. Everybody made a big deal out of Jim Morrison pulling it out on stage. No one did anything to the girls that were exposing themselves in front of the stage. They were throwing bras and underwear up on the stage at Jim. He was feeling the mood! The view (the girls) was wonderful for me. The concert itself was terrible. It was the worst I had ever heard from them. They sang almost every song off key. Jim was really drunk. At the same time this was going on, they were rioting outside. They had oversold the concert and people were trying to crash the gate.
For the month of November we followed Townsman shawnkilroy‘s nomination for the following suggestion from Townsman alexmagic. The context was a thread on songs by well-known artists given away to other artists to turn into smash hits:
Oats and I were discussing recently that there could have been a beneficial work arrangement if Lou Reed had written a few more songs for Bowie and his band to improve, allowing Bowie to donate a few more songs for Mott the Hoople to nail, and Ian Hunter could have, in turn, saved a few quality songs for someone else to do. Let’s say Def Leppard?
The assist goes to Townsman Oats.
It’s been way too long since we’ve recognized a Comment of the Month, because lord knows we get more worthy candidates than possibly any other music-discussion blog you’ll come across. In a recent Once and For All thread determining the most egregious fashion faux pas by Mick Jagger, we received the following winner:
The past month of May will go down as one of Rock Town Hall’s most fierce Comment of the Month battles. After days of deliberation among dozens of choice comments, such as this one, which was called to The Main Stage; this “Chess”-worthy snippy one; and this snazzy one, which makes use of high-brow references in the service of slamming an RTH pariah, the judges finally determined to award all who commented on this Battle Royale thread, in which Townspeople were asked to describe rock’s cross-promotional prime-time tv efforts they would like to have seen. The results of this query were better than I could have imagined. You can’t imagine the amount of sniffs we’ve gotten from Hollywood producers looking to buy the rights to your excellent flights of fancy. Don’t worry, I’ll be sure to cut you in on any deals we might land. Thanks and congratulations to each and every one of our winners!
In our recent Last Man Standing: Bands That Should Have Been Strictly Instrumental thread, Townsman Alexmagic uttered the month’s most pointed comment. The winning remark follows the jump!
