Let’s Talk About Chick Music

chick music is actually guy music that women in the room would find appealing

I’m sure this must have been an earlier discussion I missed [I don’t think there was – Ed.], but with Mr. Mod talking about “chick music” it got me thinking. Again, I’m sure there’s an RTH link to a definition [Believe it or not, there isn’t, but this post may get us there! – Ed.], but to me, chick music is actually guy music that women in the room would find appealing. It’s a way to damn a band as well. For instance, I think The Cult is chick music as a way of denigrating them.

It could be argued that bands that started out as as guy bands became chick bands as the band found where its bread was buttered—thinking The Cure, here.

So here’s a poke at a band that I would imagine is much regarded in these Halls, but that I find the MOST CHICK BAND EVER.

We all know of odd couplings of producer and artist. Phil Spector and The Ramones—really? But I stumbled across one recently that had me scratching my head—Who thought that would be a good idea? Did you know that Leiber & Stoller produced a Procol Harum album? Procol Harum’s Ninth, to be specific. If there was a “hit” on this album I think it was this:

And if you want to hear one of the worst Beatles covers ever, try this one:

Jerry Leiber must be rolling in his newly dug grave to know this is being discussed in the hallowed halls of RTH.

Any other contenders for a producer/artist mismatch?

As a new wave kid in the ’80s, I probably wore holes in the first three Echo & the Bunnymen albums, drove up to NYC to see them, etc. I recently downloaded the first two albums off iTunes—and I gotta say they still hold up.

I always thought they were the heaviest of the “romantic” bands. Way heavier and more angular than The Cure, U2, etc. That drummer’s military fills are the serious backbone of why I loved these guys. And they had a lot of songs about taking LSD, which at the time made them seem mysteriously cool.

The Burt Bacharach sweater in the video not withstanding, they did know how to rock under those haircuts.

Lou Reed…As His Music Was Meant to Sound!

Thanks to my close, personal Facebook friends Cobra Verde, here’s yet another reason to believe the long-awaited Loutallica collaboration is finally going to capture Lou’s music as it was meant to sound!

Gun to the Head: What’s the Most Overrated Beatles Song?

Picking up on what was most likely the most horrible feature ever proposed here in the halls… It’s like Dugout Chatter but laser focused and violent. It’s anathema to all that Rock Town Hall stands for. But the concept is simple. A question is posed. You answer it as quickly as possible with zero qualifications as if you had a… gun to the head. Ready?

Q: For you, what’s the most overrated Beatles song?

That is, what’s the Beatles song you know is good, that you’re not necessarily sick of hearing, yet you think to yourself whenever it comes on, You know what, this song is overrated.

I know there’s a gun to your head, but think about it: Your most overrated Beatles song should be a song that is by all accounts, even your own, actually a good (maybe even really good) song. It should be a song good enough that you once liked it—or still like it. It should be more than a great song that you’re simply sick of hearing. And finally, it should not be a song that you simply suggest is overrated because you hate Paul McCartney. In other words, don’t waste your opinion on “Michelle” or “Yesterday,” which I would argue are actually very good songs but songs that it is assumed we are too cool to have ever thought were anything but overrated.
