Nice!

Nice!

A friend of mine posted this link on a competing, nowhere-near-as-cool-as-RTH social media site, and it got me wondering whether we all agreed on Dave Grohl’s apparent fundamental goodness. I’m not looking for a snark-fest, or a dishing of the dirt, I’m more curious about people’s take on this dude. I have a feeling folks like us want to believe in DG’s character. And maybe there’s nothing wrong with that.

Wish I could say I enjoyed his music. And I mean that literally.

HVB

p.s.: my favorite recent bit of Dave Grohl goodness can be seen here.

Driving into work this beautiful spring morning, which followed a (personally, not weather-induced) miserable preceding day and night, I listened to the soundtrack from The Harder They Come, the one reggae album even non-reggae fans need to own. (How it didn’t end up on The Hold Steady’s 10 essential albums list is beyond me!) As Toots & the Maytals’ “Pressure Drop” started up and I tried to hum along with Toots I was struck, as I have been for the past 10 or 15 years, by my declining ability to hum. Although I was more of a whistler, I used to enjoy humming out a tune as a kid. Sometime in my late 30s or early 40s I began to notice that humming felt extremely uncomfortable, giving me a sensation somewhere between the feeling of a limb that has fallen asleep and the moment in the intro to The Six Million Dollar Man when Steve Austin says, “She’s breaking up!” Maybe it’s my receding gums. Maybe it’s the lack of protection afforded by my chicken lips. Whatever it is, I’m always a little disappointed that I can’t hum along exuberantly with Toots at the beginning of “Pressure Drop.”

Even if I could still hum with the freedom and comfort that I did as a kid, I would not have been able to project my hum and even have a raspy quality to it, the way Toots does. That got me thinking, there must be other songs that feature actual humming. My guess is that these songs have not been compiled and discussed in one place before, or at least as thoroughly as they can be compiled and discussed here. In short, Last Man Standing: Songs With Humming Parts.

Go!

Hope they sell t-shirts of this one!

Hope they sell t-shirts of this one!

I used to have a lot of concert posters, but they’ve all been trashed. Some of my favorites were ones I would rip off the walls of the 9:30 Club in DC or at First Ave in Minneapolis. I remember a Jason & Scorchers poster that was particularly cool back when they were a hot new band. I think the only one I still have is a signed Amy Rigby poster from her Diary of a Mod Housewife anniversary tour of a few years back.

This Replacements poster is one I will have to track down. Unless life gets in the way, I plan to head back to the Twin Cities for this show.

Does anyone collect concert posters? What are your favorites?

5 Seconds of Summer wear their influences on their chests?

5 Seconds of Summer wear their influences on their chests?

I was reading an article about 5 Seconds of Summer (it told me that they are boy band who are basically One Direction’s Australian buddies), and it got me to thinking: do even musicians like the guys in One Direction and 5 Seconds of Summer listen to fairly sophisticated music themselves? I figure they must listen to more stuff than random people who listen to them – when their lives are spent being involved in the music business, I find it a little implausible that they only listen to stuff in the top 40. But at the same time, I’d be surprised if one of the guys in One Direction started talking about his love for Can and Berlin-era David Bowie. So where in between do the rest of you think this lies (I mean, I’d assume it varies a lot by person, but still)? Or am I just totally off?

One closing thought to these ramblings: As “indie” becomes more and more popular, especially poppier acts like HAIM and CHVRCHES, I’d bet there’s a lot of overlap between what some (younger generally?) indie rock/indie pop fans listen to and what mainstream pop musicians listen to. But I really have no idea.
