As an American teenager, I first became aware of Cilla Black as a footnote to my all-encompassing Beatles education. When I got to college, long before the age of YouTube, let alone home computing and the Internet, I met a friend who owned the single of whatever song Paul McCartney threw her way. I remember it boring me, and I never heard another lick of Cilla Black until this week, when in London on vacation with my family and news broke that “Cilla,” as she’s known here, had died.

I had no idea she was so beloved in her home country. It was THE story on the news. There was some telemovie on her life that must have been made a few years ago that’s been running nonstop. In the pantheon of chubby-cheeked English singers, I figured she was a 1-hit wonder, nowhere near as beloved as likes of Lulu, Alison Moyet, the strawberry-blond Spice Girl, and all those other British women pop stars who run together in my mind, despite whatever decade in which they briefly burned brightest. Are the British more sentimental than I thought, or was Cilla Black really a relevant star beyond her footnote status in Beatles biographies?

She was a great…woman!

Our recent Last Man Standing on Tastefully Nude Album Covers (at least initially) resulted in less entries than I expected. Expecting one of those long, endless LMS competitions, I prepared, in advance, this palette-cleansing LMS, which I expect will result in a tight, fierce competition, with no more than a handful of entries. Here’s the challenge:

I went seeking a Blodwyn Pig performance and stumbled on this rare live performance by Juicy Lucy instead. Dig the outdoor hippie scene and see if you don’t settle on a favorite segment or image.

I did find some Blodwyn Pig, as well, which I may come back to at a later date, but the related stuff that showed up in my Bloodwyn Pig search on YouTube led me to a bevy of hippie blooz rock. Here’s a band called Taste, which seems to be a late-’60s band led by Rory Gallagher, before he became one of our friend HVB’s Guitar Tone Heroes:

"I don't think so..."

“Uh…I don’t think so…”

Have you ever browsed through a used records bin and been confronted with a band or album you’ve seen repeatedly yet never heard? As a music obsessive, I usually think to myself, I need to hear this someday.

Occasionally, however, despite it being the 832nd time I’ve flipped to a particular band or album, I think to myself, I don’t believe I’ve ever heard this band/album before, yet frankly, I don’t feel a reason to ever hear it.

Anything, for instance, by Barclay James Harvest, brings this thought to mind.
